What does a lineworker do?

Lineworkers construct and maintain systems for the transport and distribution of electrical energy, for communication networks and electrically-powered public transport.

Their professional and working field includes the construction, conversion and maintenance of low-voltage and high-voltage cable systems, communication and data cable systems. This is joined by power lines, cable distribution cabinets, switch and substations, public lighting and catenary installations for public transport.

 

Lineworkers work as part of a team, laying, assembling, repairing, maintaining and replacing anything relating to the power grid and data cable systems. Their own safety and that of their team colleagues always takes priority. They have to be able to rely on each other and comply with all rules of health and environmental protection. Whether up in the air or down on the ground, lineworkers work in one of the following focuses: energy, telecommunications or catenary cables. Clients include municipalities, the Swiss Confederation, cantons, and public and private companies.

 

Focus on energy:
Lineworkers with this focus are responsible for working on cable and power line installations, switch and substations, and public lighting systems.

 

Focus on telecommunications:
With this focus, lineworkers work on cable and power line installations for the transmission of communication and data signals.

 

Focus on catenary lines:
High above ground, lineworkers with this focus assemble and maintain catenary lines for rail, tram and trolleybuses to keep the public transport network running smoothly.
